New Feature: Phoenix Pseudo-RBA Jun. 15th, 2006 @ 11:52 pm
Phoenix hasn't had a Rare Bird Alert since about 1997 or so -- Steve Ganley used to run it back then. So I'll be posting an RBA-format post of rare birds on this LiveJournal, mostly for my personal benefit, covering Maricopa and northern Pinal Counties (including the Mazatzals and other areas within easy reach of Phoenix).

Do keep in mind that June and July are the slowest months for bird sightings, not just here in Phoenix, but throughout the state of Arizona.

This is not an official Rare Bird Alert -- there is no contact phone number. All reports are from the birdwg05 [AZ-NM] mailing list at BIRDWG05@listserv.arizona.edu unless stated.Collapse )

» Sycamore Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona
I don't generally get to bird southeast Arizona -- it's generally too far and too expensive on a college student income, especially when you have to stretch that budget between two. Not a complaint, just a fact of life -- these sorts of things are usually best left to folks with more spare time and money, and this isn't 1973, so you can't just hitch there like Kenn Kaufman did in following his Kingbird Highway.

Unless you get rides with fellow birders, that is. Thanks to the Internet, that is much more readily possible than before, and when one of the Arizona-New Mexico birding list put out a bulletin offering spots on a vehicle heading to Sycamore Canyon to target a specific bird, I figured, what the hey? One definite lifer, and anything else down there would be just gravy, right?

You bet.Collapse )
